Ways To Give:
Qualified Charitable Distribution (QCD)
To redirect your Required Minimum Distribution (RMD) to a charity, contact your IRA custodian to have them send a check directly to a qualified 501(c)(3) public charity. This direct transfer, known as a Qualified Charitable Distribution (QCD), is a way to fulfill your RMD while excluding the amount from your taxable income. You cannot withdraw the funds first and then donate them; the distribution must go directly from the IRA to the charity.
Steps to redirect your RMD:
- Confirm your eligibility: Ensure you are at least 70½ years old at the time of the distribution.
- Choose a qualified charity: The recipient must be a 501(c)(3) public charity. You can verify its qualification through the charity’s website or by using the IRS’s online search tool for tax-exempt organizations.
- Contact your IRA custodian: Inform your IRA custodian or financial advisor of your intention to make a QCD and provide the charity’s information and the distribution amount.

San Francisco, California 94120-7378 - Initiate the transfer: Your custodian will send the check directly to the charity or mail it to you to deliver. It is best to have the custodian send the check to avoid any issues with the distribution timing.
- Note the transaction: Keep a record of the distribution, and be sure to notify the charity to expect the donation from your IRA custodian.
- Report on your tax return: Your custodian will send you a 1099-R form. When filing, report the full amount as an IRA distribution and enter “QCD” on the line for the taxable amount, which will be zero if the entire distribution was a QCD.
